At age 3, Rock Hill native Rudy Currence belted out a solo of
"Deck the Halls" during his preschool Christmas program. By the age of 6, Currence had added a brother and piano to his act. Last week, at the age of 18, and after appearances at
Charlotte Hornets' games singing the National Anthem and on It's Showtime at the Apollo, Currence completed his first music video and R&B single.
"The video was incredible," said Currence. "I got to meet a lot of nice people and work with a lot of pretty girls."
The video was directed by Greg Williams of Davion Star Productions, and the single, "Do It Like That," (due to hit the stores September 21) was produced by Character Entertainment's
Troy Taylor and Charles Farrar, said Currence.
"I've worked with great producers, including Bryce Wilson," said Currence. "They have all
taught me a lot and I have learned from their individual styles."
Although Currence has learned a lot from the producers he has worked with and has a strong
musical background (he like most other artists sang in the church choir), he says he credits Taylor and Farrar for helping him hone his vocal skills.
"They made me do it over until it was right. I appreciate that because it made the record sound better."
Currence is dedicated to his craft. His dedication is displayed in his willingness to study other genres of music, including jazz and classical music.
This fall Currence will be entering his sophomore year at Furman University to continue his studies in music, primary concentration in voice and piano.
With his album due out early next year, and the anticipation of his graduation, the future looks extremely promising for Rudy Currence.
If his past record is an indication of his future, things will definitely be bright around the Rock Hill area for a while.
