The Naked Truth
Video explores truths and myths about black sexuality
by LaToya Hankins - THE CHARLOTTE POST
A
video series addresses the sensitive subject of sexuality and blackness. "Better Sex Video Series for Black Couples" is the only sex education video series ever written, directed and produced exclusively for black couples by black experts, according to its creator.

Better Sex Video for Black Couples"The idea came for this series came when I was approached by Mark Schoen, director of sex education for Sinclair Intimacy Institute about doing work with the company," said Herb Samuel, a consulting sexologist specializing in African American sexuality and professor of human sexuality at LaGuardia Community College in New York.

"I have used his work before in my classes but many of the products were made for all-white audiences. Since many of my students are African American or Latino, they didn't relate."

Along with creating a product that his students could identify with, Samuels wanted to address the type of sexual lifestyles his students were leading, which is far different than public perception.

"African Americas have as diverse a sexual life as any other race, they are just less likely to talk about it because that topic just seems more taboo," Samuel said. "Sometimes the myths about black sexuality gets in the way of couples enjoying themselves. We are offering this video series as a way for people to watch it and hopefully open up dialogue with their partner about sexuality."

The two-video series features sex educators who address commonly asked questions and concerns about black sexuality while three black couples demonstrate basic and advanced techniques to enhance sexual play and pleasure. The series also addresses black sexual development, stereotypes, sexual portrayal of African Americans in the media and fantasies.

"You can only talk about sex so much at some point you need to show it," Samuels said. "The visual nature of the video series reduces the risk of miscommunication about sex between partners who may find the subject matter difficult or embarrassing to discuss."

"Better Sex Video for Black Couples" is VHS formatted and costs $39.90 for the two volume set. The video series can be ordered online at www.ebonyintimacy.com or by calling (800) 955-0888, product code 1835 .
