Herbert was born in Mount Olive and learned to play by watching his father and brothers, and listening to Blind Boy Fuller and Buddy Moss. The only means of showcasing himself in the
small town of Burgaw, where he still live, was to play fishfrys and local parties.Moore was finally able to show off his rare talent of picking, using his thumb for bass notes, just
five years ago at a Wilmington Blues Festival.
He was discovered in a small club in Wilmington by the co-owner Frank Greathouse, who
originally told him to come back later during an open jam session one night. Frank, who is now his manager, said, "I almost made the biggest mistake of my life, but Herbert came back."
Herbert released his first CD entitled "Blues Came to Burgaw" in 1998 with a style of acoustic blues guitar that has become very rare.
As he played Saturday night, he leaned back and closed his eyes.
"Closed eyes and rocking means he getting' in the groove, and when he gets there, watch out," hollered Frank Greathouse, his manager.
Herbert will return to Charlotte, Oct. 22-23 for the 2nd Annual Charlotte BluesFest. He's a great guitar player who plays because he loves it, not for the profit from it.
At almost 71, Herbert still lives in a small old trailer and gets rides to his gigs. The money is not an issue. Herbert's Motto: " I may not be the best blues guitar player around, I may not be
the best blues singer around, but I'm 'IT' until somebody else comes along."
