The "Tom Joyner Morning Show" has made a Charlotte group's Christmas come true. Thanks to Joyner, whose program is heard on WBAV radio (101.9 FM), the Onyx Optimist Club of Charlotte can pay for
cheerleading uniforms. The group's good fortune comes as the result of a letter written by vice-president Gerenda Davis that was selected last Wednesday as a Morning Christmas Wish winner.
"We often think that by teaching the basics we can make things better but sometimes its necessary to give a little something special to keep them going," Davis wrote.
The "Tom Joyner Morning Show" grants Christmas wishes throughout the year. Joyner not only agreed to pay for the uniforms but also the pom pons, lettering and hair bows for the
25 girls on the squad at a cost of $3,121.50.
Onyx Optimist Club, which was formed in 1995, works with girls who need a little extra
guidance to help push them in the right direction. Members range in age from 6 to 18 years old and the group leaders teach them lessons in health, etiquette, and community service.
Davis said the girls are scheduled to participate in the Johnson C. Smith University homecoming parade and the Carousel Parade but there was a need for cheerleading uniforms.
"We were doing another fund-raiser but it was raising money fast enough so I came up with the idea of writing the letter," Davis said. "I found out two weeks ago that there were going
to fulfill the letter and I was really surprised and really thankful."
