| If you read this, you will know more than you ever wanted to know about websites and their history and
you'll realize just why it is so important that your website needs to be not just evolved but forever evolving! HISTORY OF WEBSITES - 101
The internet is basically a bunch of computers hooked
together to create the world's largest computer network. It started out as a project funded by the Department of Defense in 1969. In the 1980s, the National Science
Foundation got involved and established a faster network called NSFNET. It arranged to set up a bunch of regional networks to connect the users in each region, with NSFNET connecting all the regional networks. By 1990,
this was a huge success. UNIX By this time, university classrooms were using UNIX - a
free type of operating software developed by AT&T (yes, really) and the University of California at Berkeley. In fact,
Internet of today is still very much built on Unix Servers. Well, as you can imagine, back then, the Internet was literally for rocket scientists. To navigate, you needed to memorize and type obscure commands and long complicated
addresses. Boring! Locating what you wanted
depended on skill, persistence and a whole lot of luck! On the right is an example of a Telnet screen which we still use today to manipulate some UNIX commands. It's
a far cry from the websites you are used to looking at, huh?
WORLD WIDE WEB
Then came the World Wide Web which was invented by a research group at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN). They found a way to automate the process of following cross references between documents posted on the
Internet - HyperText Markup Language. In fact, this page is written in HTML. If you go to your menu bar
and hit View and then Source (in IE) or View and then Page Source (in Netscape), you will see a whole bunch of HTML code.
Lovely, isn't it? Well, that's what we do. The first websites popped up and were designed by programmers. They looked a lot like the boring one above. HTML DEVELOPMENTS Then HTML developed a little and graphics capabilities were added. Hence, a slew of websites
cropped up that offered little more than pictures thrown on a page, pages which scrolled forever and which took a day to load! Okay, so we're exaggerating, but not much. You've seen them. You
can go get a cup of coffee and come back and, if you're lucky, it's done loading by
then. People threw their brochures up on a website and then wondered why no one visited the site!
Take a look at the screen captures of the
site above or to the left! Classic examples of
sites of yesterday. They have huge graphics and one has ugly scrolling frames. If you've ever gotten trapped in frames inside of other frames, you'll know why those are a no-no! Now, look below at the new versions of those sites - which of course, were created by Siobhan
Envisions! Today, web visitors are pickier than ever. They expect a lot, because they've seen a lot. Graphic artists and skilled interactive programmers have gotten involved
in creating interactive, fun, and enlightening websites. That's what you need! Visitors want interactive forms. They want fun rollover navigation buttons. They expect to put their mouse over a graphic and have the graphic change. They are used to it. They expect a shopping cart
order form on a secure server. If it isn't, they won't buy.
